Anatomy
A deep muscle between tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus; its slim tendon crosses the second compartment to the great toe distal phalanx.
Origin & insertion
Middle anterior fibula and interosseous membrane.
Action
Extends the great toe distal phalanx and assists dorsiflexion.
Innervation
Deep peroneal nerve (L5).
Clinical notes
Its strength is the last lost in deep-peroneal entrapment; forefoot crush injuries cutting over its high tendon demand mandatory checking.
