Anatomy

The larger bone of the lower leg, also called the shinbone. Its upper surface (tibial plateau) forms the lower portion of the knee joint and bears the body's weight; the medial and lateral menisci rest upon it.

Clinical notes

Tibial plateau fractures are among the most common knee fractures after sporting twists and may accompany ligament tears. Shin splints affect the bone's anterior border in runners.
