Anatomy
The left member: same muscular pattern and three narrowings, but it crosses beside the sigmoid and superior rectal arteries and rises near the left common iliac artery — the vessel-adjacent ureter in sigmoid surgery.
Clinical notes
Its injury is a recognised hazard of sigmoid surgery (preoperative stenting in advanced tumours); its referred left-flank pain can mimic diverticulitis clinically.
