Anatomy
A short strap hidden by the thyrohyoid membrane, from the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage to the hyoid greater cornu, elevating hyoid and larynx together in swallowing.
Origin & insertion
Oblique line of the thyroid cartilage.
Action
Elevates hyoid and larynx in swallowing, or depresses the larynx when the hyoid is fixed.
Innervation
Nerve to thyrohyoid (C1 branch via the ansa).
Clinical notes
Surgeons respect it in partial hyoidectomy for sleep surgery; its inflammatory pain mimics acute laryngitis.
