Anatomy

The palatopharyngeus is a prominent longitudinal muscle of the soft palate and pharynx. Forming the muscular foundation of the palatopharyngeal arch (posterior tonsillar pillar), it originates from the palatine aponeurosis and descends into the lateral pharyngeal wall to insert onto the posterior border of the thyroid cartilage. It elevates the larynx and closes the palatopharyngeal sphincter during swallowing.

Origin & insertion

From the hard palate and palatine aponeurosis to the posterior border of the thyroid cartilage lamina and side wall of the pharynx.

Action

Elevates the pharynx and larynx during deglutition; pulls the palatopharyngeal arches medially to isolate the oral cavity from the oropharynx.

Innervation

Pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) via the pharyngeal plexus.

Clinical notes

Forms the posterior boundary of the tonsillar bed; careful dissection along the anterior border of the palatopharyngeus minimizes bleeding and muscle damage during tonsillectomy.

FAQ

What is the role of the Palatopharyngeus (Left)?

The palatopharyngeus is a prominent longitudinal muscle of the soft palate and pharynx. Forming the muscular foundation of the palatopharyngeal arch (posterior tonsillar pillar), it originates from the palatine aponeurosis and descends into the lateral pharyngeal wall to insert onto the posterior border of the thyroid cartilage. It elevates the larynx and closes the palatopharyngeal sphincter during swallowing.

Why is the Palatopharyngeus (Left) clinically important?

Forms the posterior boundary of the tonsillar bed; careful dissection along the anterior border of the palatopharyngeus minimizes bleeding and muscle damage during tonsillectomy.
